Bij een Internet domeinnaam hoort een extensie. Algemene extensies (icann tld's) voor publiek gebruik zijn bijvoorbeeld .com (commercieel), .net (network), .org (organization), landelijke tld's (top level domains) zijn onder andere .de (Duitsland), .nl (Nederland), .be (België), .us (USA), etc..

Welke extensie? .nl of .com

Een Internet domeinnaam met de extensie .nl wordt gerigistreerd bij de Stichting Domeinregistratie Nederland (www.SIDN.nl). Dit kan niet rechtstreeks maar loopt altijd via een tussenpersoon de Registrar. Dit is gewoonlijk de provider waar de website wordt gehost.

Wat kost een domeinnaam registratie

Dit hangt af van de extensie. De jaarlijkse kosten voor de registratie van een domeinnaam, afhankelijk van de extensie, variëren globaal tussen 10 en 35 euro per jaar. Soms bieden hosting providers het eerste jaar een lagere prijs, maar deze geldt alleen voor het eerste jaar. De genoemde prijs is voor registratie van een domeinnaam en is niet inclusief de hosting. Website hosting, het aanbieden van computercapaciteit aan derden, wordt afzonderlijk berekend en begint voor een statische website vanaf ongeveer 30 euro per jaar, en voor een dynamische website met een database ligt dit rond de vanaf prijs van 100 euro per jaar.

Doelgebied van de website

Indien een commerciële website op Nederland is gericht gaat de voorkeur normaal gesproken uit naar de Nederlandse .nl extensie of .com extensie. Zoekmachines die lokaal opereren zoals de zoekmachine van google geeft binnen Nederland automatisch voorrang aan websites met een lokale extensie of in geval van een .com extensie voorrang op basis van het IP nummer van het land waar de .com website wordt gehost (in dit geval Nederland). Zo wordt een Nederlandstalige website met een .nl extensie of een .com extensie welke binnen Nederland wordt gehost beter gevonden binnen Nederland, maar veel minder bij eenzelfde zoekopdracht gedaan binnen België. Een Nederlandstalige website met een extensie .be zal in principe beter worden geplaatst op de zoekresultaten pagina binnen het doelgebied België, en zal nog beter scoren binnen België als de website daar ook landelijk wordt gehost.

Target gebied buiten Nederland

Richt een .nl websiite of een .com website gehost binnen Nederland zich niet op Nederland, dan kan door middel van een verzoek aan google bijvoorbeeld een ander doelgebied worden aangegeven.
